JAMB MADE EASY

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board, JAMB was established since 1978 and saddled with the responsibility of conducting entrance examination for prospective Nigerian students seeking admission into Universities, Polytechnics and colleges of Education. Its functions were to serve as a check and balance mechanism for questionable results in external exams such as West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO).

Ever since its establishment we have constantly noticed a decline in the quality of student’s results. Statistics have revealed that most candidates sit for this examination repeatedly either due to inability to gain admission into preferred institutions of choice or not attaining the cut-off points. It is highly unfair that the few students who manage to come out with good points and were not able to gain admission due to one reason or the other have to re-sit for the exam, as it is valid for just one year.

Recently, the Senate passed a motion urging the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to extend the validity of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to three years as against the current one year. Particularly, it is hoped that it will save parents and their wards the rigor and cost implication of taking the examination every year.

 Those who argue against the Senate’s proposal claim that it might affect the examination body’s revenue generation potential through the sale of forms and the conduct of the examination itself. In our opinion, this may not necessarily hold water as the interest of the masses that bear the brunt of the cost of conducting this examination yearly must be considered. Good and quality education is expensive but the citizenry must not be subjected to hardship in its pursuit when its attainment can be made easier. We are in support of the Senate on this issue, we believe that it is best interest of Nigerians as a whole if results of these candidates are made to remain valid since it is an open secret that the country lacks the capacity to accommodate up to 25 per cent of the total number of registered candidates.

With all said and done it remains a fact that Nigerian students must prepare and study hard for JAMB, so that when this bill is passed it would be in favor of students.
